Our Story

Travis came home from an AI hackathon in the fall of 2025 and told his wife, Katie, that the legal profession would be gone in two years.

He was the person at his firm people came to with AI questions, so he thought he was ahead. What he learned was that the future was already here and that people were doing things he didn’t think were possible yet.

Everything he had built a career on suddenly looked replaceable.

He spent the next several months tearing apart the practice he had built as a partner and rebuilding it to run on AI: deep research, drafting briefs and comment letters, and even time entry and expense reports. If a part of the job could be rebuilt, he rebuilt it.

As he was rebuilding, he wasn’t just learning to operate AI. He was actually getting better at practicing law — sharper in his thinking, faster than he had ever been, and turning out better work for his clients. And he was winning new clients and getting hired to do work in new areas of the law.

Travis has changed his mind about the future of the legal profession, and he is more optimistic than ever. Not because the technology is less capable than he feared, but because of what happens when that capability is combined with real legal expertise.

The lawyers who develop AI skills are not replaced by AI. They harness it to deliver better results and grow their practice.

Looking around and talking to other lawyers, he saw no shortage of new tools — and very few people helping lawyers climb the learning curve.

That is when we decided to build this together — Travis from inside the practice of law, Katie from a career building professional service businesses.

Bell Rock Strategies exists to help lawyers build AI skills so they can be better at the work than they were before.

The Name

Bell Rock Strategies is named for the Bell Rock Lighthouse, which stands on a reef eleven miles off the east coast of Scotland. For centuries the reef wrecked ships. Legend says a medieval abbot hung a bell on the rock to warn sailors. Between 1807 and 1810, Robert Stevenson built a lighthouse on it, working only in the few hours each day when the tide left the rock above water. More than two hundred years later, it is the oldest sea-washed lighthouse still standing, and its light still works.

We are largely optimistic about the future of AI. Given the uncertain weather gathering on the horizon, a lighthouse has seemed an apt metaphor for our work.

The Principals

Travis Wussow

Co-founder, CEO & General Counsel

Travis is a practicing energy and regulatory lawyer who has been building with AI since the release of GPT-3, and a lecturer at the University of Texas School of Law, where he leads the Texas Law AI Skills Program. Most recently a partner at Jackson Walker, he spent the last several years tearing down his own legal practice and rebuilding it to highly leverage AI tools and workflows. Before returning to Texas he spent years in Washington, D.C., in vice president and general counsel roles, including at a large national philanthropy. He teaches AI the way he learned it, which was on the real work of building a legal practice.

Travis is an eighth-generation Texan, fountain pen enthusiast, and amateur pickleballer.

Katie Wussow

Co-founder & COO

Katie has spent more than twenty years in professional services designing and owning systems of execution. Most recently she was Vice President of People and Engagement at 49 Financial, a wealth management firm, where she led learning and development. At Bell Rock she runs the business itself on AI, using the same tools and habits the firm teaches in our programs and works with clients on how people actually change the way they work. In her earlier years, she was in management consulting supporting state and local governments across Texas and the Southwest.

Katie is a Longhorn football fan, mediocre CrossFitter, and part time teen chauffeur.

The Wussows live in Austin, Texas, with their two daughters.
